The Brody School of Medicine Academic Support and Enrichment Center at East Carolina University is currently recruiting for a Counselor.
The primary mission of the Academic Support and Enrichment Center (ASEC) is to maximize the academic success, personal development, and graduation of all medical students, while emphasizing service to minority and disadvantaged students. In addition to this mission, the staff of the ASEC recruits premedical students at the undergraduate level and provides counseling services on a variety of topics related to academic and human development. The ASEC serves as a change agent and as a resource for addressing issues of diversity.
The counselor is an EPA Non-Teaching faculty position employed on a twelve-month basis. The counselor's primary role is to provide academic counseling, career development services via individual and group counseling and psycho-educational programs focused on the clients' academic, career and personal development. In addition, the counselor may provide crisis intervention, assessment for cognitive concerns, and supervision of graduate practicum and intern students. Some travel is required. The successful candidate should (1) be committed to a proactive student development perspective involving an active relationship with the campus community, (2) be team-oriented, user-friendly to students and faculty/staff, be prepared to handle a busy caseload and have the ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning and ability to work at a fast pace, possess a strong work ethic, and possess a willingness to collaborate, (3) be multiculturally competent, possessing the ability and skills to work with diverse populations (ethnic, LGBTQ, gender, etc.), (4) have proficiency in oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and leading group discussions, (5) have broad "generalist" clinical skills in assessing and intervening with a wide range of academic or personality disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology in treatment utilizing a time limited model of care.
Qualifications include a minimum of a Masters Degree from an appropriately accredited institution in counseling, psychology, or appropriate human service field, a Doctorate is preferred; demonstrated skills and experience in counseling, evaluation, supervision, and consulting; knowledge of psychological and educational assessment techniques preferred, computer programs, and current research in counseling; demonstrated competencies in the development and implementation of programs designed to facilitate student academic, personal and professional growth. Preference will be given to candidates with educational assessment and career development experience. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
